Main character Tod is a lesson in paradox. Great story arc, vivid characters, a few plot twists I didn't see coming, and a wholly believable portrayal of life in a low-income school and the burdens & stigma of child poverty. This book is what "There's A Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" would have been if Bradley Chalkers hadn't met an adult who viewed him as a good kid until high school. Middle of the road for me, but like I said, I can imagine some people really liking it…so long as they don’t mind their female characters half-baked. There are some great ideas and themes and a decent narrative voice. Overall, the conclusion falls flat with several loose ends, the side characters are poorly developed, and the main character feels like the reader has never met, never mind been, a bully. It’s like the author has only seen popular “mean girls” in movies. The “popular girl” is terribly written, like a caricature, and her motives are stupid.

Oh, the female characters…it’s very sexist and archetypal on that front. Regardless, by the end, we’ve got a redemption arc but no justice for the kids he did end up hurting, no wrap-up on his friends, and no real conclusion with the one fleshed out female character. The slang, sans swear words, reads like an adult trying to sound like a teenager.Īlso, it’s billed like it’s a real bully, but the main character isn’t really that much of a bully. The “underprivileged kid who is a bully and is actually really into reading classic literature” character is as annoying as his Clockwork Orange references are unrealistic. I made a post earlier about the cringey and unrealistic dialogue, despite the decent narrative voice. Probably would be a book even the kids who “don’t like to read” wouldn’t hate. I can see this being a hit in certain middle or high school classrooms. Really great narrative voice, a quick and enjoyable read. Along with the appearance of a mysterious girl, the boy is forced to face the reality of what he has written, and begins a battle to attempt to rewrite death."
